Flying Dutchman - Engineering Log

Date: February 10, 2026 Session: Phase 4 - UI Overhaul & Modularization Status: ✅ UI Complete / Modularization Verified

Executive Summary

This session focused on elevating the application's UI to a world-class, native macOS standard (HIG 2026) while finalizing the architectural modularization. The application now features a "Liquid Glass" aesthetic with deep system integration, moving away from standard lists to a modern, card-based interface.

Key Achievements:

  • Visual Overhaul: Complete redesign using "Liquid Glass" materials, pastel color palette, and SwiftCharts.
  • Modularization: Successfully decoupled Settings, Dashboard, and Containers into independent feature modules with strict dependency graphs.
  • UX Improvements: Simplified networking setup (DNS/CA) into a one-click UI flow.

1. Modular Architecture Refinement

Dependency Graph Updates

  • Settings Module: Added dependency on NetworkKit to enable direct access to NetworkSetupManager.
  • Dashboard Module: Added dependency on ContainerKit to prepare for real-time VM metrics.
  • Strict Boundaries: Verified that feature modules do not depend on App or each other, preventing circular dependencies.

Files Created/Refactored

  • Projects/Features/Settings/Sources/Settings/SettingsViewModel.swift: New view model to handle privileged networking tasks.
  • Projects/Features/Settings/Project.swift: Updated dependencies.
  • Projects/Features/Dashboard/Project.swift: Updated dependencies.

2. UI Overhaul (HIG 2026 "Liquid Glass")

Design System Updates

  • Color Palette:
    • Accent: Updated to Pastel Orange (#EA6852) for a modern, friendly feel.
    • Primary: Updated to Pastel Royal Blue (#236092) for deep contrast.
  • Components:
    • GlassCard: A reusable SwiftUI container applying native .glassEffect() with padding and corner radius tokens.
    • Sidebar: Enhanced SidebarView with ToolbarSpacer and translucent background to match macOS window chrome standards.

Feature: Dashboard

  • Hero Section: Implemented a "System Overview" card featuring a live CPU load area chart using SwiftCharts.
    • Visuals: Gradient fills (.linearGradient), smooth interpolation (.catmullRom), and hidden axes for a clean look.
  • Status Grid: Replaced text lists with a LazyVGrid of StatusCard components showing container counts and resource usage.
  • Quick Actions: Added prominent glass buttons for common tasks (New Container, Debug Shell).

Feature: Containers List

  • Grid Layout: Moved from List to LazyVGrid for a responsive, visual browsing experience.
  • Card Design:
    • Visual Status: Color-coded icons (Green/Red/Orange) for container state.
    • Port Chips: Compact, pill-shaped indicators for port mappings.
    • Typography: Clear hierarchy with Headline for names and CodeSmall for technical IDs.

Feature: Settings & Networking

  • Networking UX: Implemented a user-friendly interface for the complex task of DNS/CA setup.
    • Status Indicators: Clear "Installed" (Green) / "Not Installed" (Orange) text.
    • Action Buttons: One-click "Install" and "Trust" buttons that invoke the privileged helper via NetworkSetupManager.
  • Glass Forms: Replaced standard Form sections with custom GlassCard groupings for a unified aesthetic.

3. Next Steps

  • Build Verification: Run tuist generate to apply dependency changes.
  • Debug Shell: Implement the terminal emulator view (currently a placeholder).
  • Real Metrics: Connect DashboardViewModel to ContainerizationRuntime for actual CPU/Memory stats.
