fix(site): accept only same-origin JSON signups and require double opt-in - #77
The newsletter endpoint parsed any body as JSON regardless of Content-Type. That let a text/plain form post from any site, which skips the CORS preflight, reach the provider call. Contacts were also created as subscribed, so a third-party address went straight onto the list. I checked production with invalid addresses only: a text/plain body got through to email validation, and seven quick requests from one client never hit the 5-per-minute limit, because the limiter only lives in one instance. There's no sign anyone has abused it. This closes the gap.
/api/subscribe returns 403 for Sec-Fetch-Site: cross-site or an Origin that doesn't match the Host, and 415 for anything that isn't application/json. Both checks run before the rate limit. The footer form already posts same-origin JSON, so it's unaffected.
Contacts are created as pending. EmailOctopus holds them until the confirmation link is clicked, which matches the "Check your inbox" copy.
New browser test covers the cross-site, missing and text/plain cases, plus same-origin JSON still reaching validation.
README-VERCEL notes that the list needs double opt-in enabled, and that the in-memory limit is per instance only.
Verified locally: lint, type-check, build, test:browser 10/10, scene 12/12, support 9/9, PostHog 30/30.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Email signups now create contacts in a pending state. Enable double opt-in for the mailing list to send confirmation emails.
The subscription endpoint rejects cross-site requests and requests that aren’t sent as JSON. Requests without an origin are accepted, and invalid email addresses continue to receive an error response.
Documentation
Updated the signup troubleshooting guide with details about confirmation emails, request requirements, and the per-instance scope of rate limiting.
…t-in
- fix(site): reject cross-site requests (Sec-Fetch-Site or a foreign Origin)
with 403 and non-JSON bodies with 415, before the rate limit; a text/plain
form post from any page used to reach the provider call
- fix(site): create EmailOctopus contacts as pending so the confirmation
email gates the list
- test(site): cover cross-site, missing and text/plain content types, and
same-origin JSON still reaching validation
- docs(deploy): note the double opt-in dependency and the per-instance limit

Walkthrough
POST /api/subscribe now rejects cross-site requests and requests without an application/json content type before rate limiting. New EmailOctopus contacts use pending status. Tests and troubleshooting notes cover these changes.

The route checks cross-site status and content type before rate limiting, then creates EmailOctopus contacts with pending status. Tests cover rejected request types, origins, and invalid emails. The README documents request restrictions, per-instance rate limiting, and the double opt-in requirement.

The string body causes Node’s fetch to add text/plain;charset=UTF-8. The “no content-type” case therefore does not exercise an absent-header request. Use a byte body for this case. The expected 415 result remains correct; this is a coverage gap, not an incorrect assertion.

Update the “no content-type” case in the browser test to use a byte body instead
of a string, ensuring fetch sends the request without adding a Content-Type
header; keep the expected 415 status unchanged.

Publishes #77: /api/subscribe rejects cross-site and foreign-Origin requests (403) and non-JSON bodies (415) before the rate limit, and new contacts are created as pending for double opt-in. The dev tree matched the reviewed #77 head; dev push verify passed on ef2f5dc and this PR's own run was skipped as the internal-promotion duplicate. Held from ~14:40Z until the team's Vercel deploy cap freed a slot.
