Document battery monitoring - #17
Conversation
The docs described battery monitoring as an on/off toggle plus a hand-calculated divider. The firmware has been well past that for a while: Configuration -> System Setup exposes battery type, cell count, a configurable voltage divider ratio and a per-cell alarm threshold, none of which were written down anywhere. The divider ratio is the one that matters. The Hardware Guide walked through picking resistors so the ADC sees a safe voltage, but never said the ratio has to be entered in the UI afterwards. Follow the old guide exactly and you get safe hardware reporting the wrong voltage, with nothing to suggest why. It is also easy to enter the wrong number, because the guide works in the divider fraction (0.23 for 33k/10k) while the setting wants the reciprocal (4.3). Adds docs/BATTERY_MONITORING.md covering how the reading is produced, divider sizing per pack, the four settings, per-board pins and defaults, calibration against a multimeter, and troubleshooting. Rewrites the Hardware Guide section around a sizing table rather than a sequence of worked examples ending in the right answer, and warns that the default ratio of 2.0 suits 1S only - a fully charged 2S pack through a 2:1 divider puts 4.2 V on a 3.3 V pin. Corrects the User Guide, which claimed the gate raises audio and visual alerts when the battery is low. It does not. The alarm is evaluated in the browser, and nothing warns you if no browser is connected. BatteryMonitor::checkBatteryState() does beep the buzzer, but it is gated on a threshold that is always zero: the config default is conf.alarm = 0 and the web UI sends alarm: 0, marked "Legacy alarm field (no longer used)". The doc records this as a gap to close in firmware rather than pretending the feature works.
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe pull request adds a battery monitoring reference and updates existing hardware and user documentation. It documents divider sizing, board-specific pins, configuration, calibration, browser alerts, and troubleshooting. ChangesBattery monitoring documentation

Account for VBAT_ADD in the calibration formula.
BatteryMonitor::getBatteryVoltage() computes the displayed value as map(..., 0, 33 * scale) + add, with add expressed in tenths of a volt. The settings path changes only scale, so the proportional formula is incorrect when VBAT_ADD is non-zero. Use the offset-corrected formula:

Require a divider for every pack, including 1S.
The ADC must not receive more than 3.3 V, while a fully charged 1S pack reaches 4.2 V. The firmware’s default ratio of 2.0 assumes a 2:1 divider, which reduces 1S voltage to 2.1 V at the pin. State that users must connect each pack through a divider sized for its fully charged voltage and enter the matching ratio; use a larger ratio for 2S and above.

Battery monitoring had no dedicated documentation, and what existed had drifted
behind the firmware.
The gap
Configuration -> System Setup -> Battery Monitoringexposes four settings —battery type, cell count, voltage divider ratio and a per-cell alarm threshold —
backed by
batteryCells,batteryVoltageDividerandgetLowBatteryAlarmPerCellin
config.h. None of them were documented. The divider ratio is the one that bites.
HARDWARE_GUIDE.mdwalked throughpicking resistors so the ADC sees a safe voltage, then stopped. It never said the
ratio has to be entered in the UI afterwards, so following it exactly gives you
safe hardware reporting the wrong voltage with no hint why. Worse, the guide
works in the divider fraction (0.23 for a 33k/10k divider) while the setting
wants the reciprocal (4.3), so the obvious number to type in is wrong.
Changes
New
docs/BATTERY_MONITORING.md— how the reading is produced, dividersizing per pack, the four settings, per-board pins and defaults, calibration
against a multimeter, and troubleshooting.
HARDWARE_GUIDE.md— the section is now built around a sizing table ratherthan a sequence of worked examples that arrive at the right answer via two wrong
ones. It also warns that the compiled-in default ratio of 2.0 suits 1S only: a
fully charged 2S pack through a 2:1 divider puts 4.2 V on a 3.3 V pin. That
was implied by the old maths but never stated, and it is the failure mode that
damages hardware.
USER_GUIDE.md— corrected, see below. One correction worth flagging
The User Guide claimed the gate gives "Audio/visual alerts when low". It does
not. The alarm is evaluated in the browser by
data/script.js, so if nobrowser is connected to the gate, nothing warns you.
BatteryMonitor::checkBatteryState()does beep the buzzer and blink the LED, butit only runs when its threshold is above zero, and the threshold is always zero:
conf.alarm = 0is the config default and the web UI sendsalarm: 0, marked"Legacy alarm field (no longer used)".
The new doc records this as a gap to close in firmware rather than pretending the
feature works. No code is changed here — this PR is documentation only.
