fix: count only tool dicts in nested lists for the edit hint - #6232
Follow-up to #6220, which auto-merged two minutes before this commit was pushed.
#6220's last bot commit made _offers_edit_tool look inside any nested list, strings included. But _format_tools_for_completion keeps only tool dicts from a nested list, so tools=[["edit_file"]] sends no edit tool and yet got the "use edit_file" hint. That told the model to use a tool it doesn't have; Greptile flagged it on #6220.
This counts only dicts inside nested lists, matching the formatter. I checked the formatter's output for each shape with a fresh agent, because the formatter caches by tool name:
tools=
formatter sends
hint before
hint after
[[{edit_file schema}]]
edit_file
yes
yes
[["edit_file"]]
nothing
yes
no
The bot's test asserted the false positive. It now uses a nested schema, plus a test that a nested string gets no hint. 33 related tests pass on current main.
Editing guidance now appears when a permitted edit tool is provided, including when its definition is nested. Guidance no longer appears for tools that are denied or for nested entries that are not valid tool definitions.
Tests
Added checks for nested edit-tool definitions, invalid nested entries, and denied edit tools to verify which tools and guidance are included in chat requests.
_format_tools_for_completion flattens a nested tool list but keeps only
its tool dicts, so tools=[["edit_file"]] sends no edit tool. Counting the
nested string told the model to use a tool it did not have.

Walkthrough
ChatMixin._offers_edit_tool now filters nested tool entries to valid function schemas and checks tool permission before offering the edit-tool hint. Tests verify detection, formatted tool handling, and permission-denied behavior.
Changes: Nested edit-tool detection

Summary
Detection and native-chat tests src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/agent/chat_mixin.py, src/praisonai-agents/tests/unit/agent/test_system_prompt_relevant_hints.py
Nested tool entries qualify only when they are function-schema dictionaries. An edit tool qualifies only when _tool_name_allowed permits it. Tests cover nested invalid entries, formatted tools, and permission-denied tools.
The nested-list fix is mergeable with follow-up awareness: custom-LLM requests can still advertise denied edit tools while omitting their guidance. Align permission filtering across request paths.

Count nested edit tools only when the formatter sends them.
For nested tool lists, _offers_edit_tool reads a dict's top-level name when it has no function dict. _format_tools_for_completion drops that dict, so the edit tool is not sent. The edit hint still names it, and the openai harness prompt says "use edit_file".

Update the nested-tool filtering before `_offers_edit_tool` to include only
dictionaries accepted by `_format_tools_for_completion`, so edit-tool detection
and the generated edit hint reflect tools actually sent to the completion

Assert the nested edit schema reaches the completion request.
The test test_nested_tool_list_offers_the_edit_hint checks only the system prompt. A change that drops the nested EDIT_SCHEMA from the tools sent to the model would still pass, and the prompt would still advertise edit_file. The existing _system_sent helper can capture the sent tool names, so add that check.

_prune_denied_tools drops denied tools from the payload, so the hint must
not name them. Tests now record the formatted tool payload, which also
checks that a nested edit schema is actually sent.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
✅ A few lines in ChatMixin._offers_edit_tool, no new modules
Backward compatible
✅ The hint only changes when the edit tool is not sent to the model anyway (nested names, denied by permissions)
Performance (hot path)
✅ Adds one _tool_name_allowed set lookup per edit-named tool; the result is already part of the prompt cache key
SDK value
✅ The system prompt no longer tells the model to use an edit tool missing from the request, which avoids made-up tool calls
No Agent param bloat
✅ No new params or exports
Repo routing
✅ Core prompt-building logic, so it belongs in praisonaiagents
Phase 2 — Fixes pushed (a0ad968af)
Files modified
src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/agent/chat_mixin.py: _offers_edit_tool now also requires self._tool_name_allowed(name). This is the same check _prune_denied_tools uses, so an edit tool removed by permissions no longer earns the hint. (CodeRabbit, Minor; valid.)
The _system_sent helper now records agent._format_tools_for_completion(tools), the payload the real request builds. Before, it recorded raw call arguments, so it saw None whenever tools were inherited from the agent and could not catch a schema being dropped.
Added test_nested_edit_schema_is_sent_with_the_hint: the hint and the nested edit_file schema are both sent. (CodeRabbit nitpick; valid.)
Added test_permission_denied_edit_tool_gets_no_hint: with edit_file denied, it is pruned from the payload and the hint is absent. This test fails without the fix.
Tests:test_system_prompt_relevant_hints.py 19/19 pass. Across tests/unit/agent and tests/unit/test_permissions.py: 670 pass, and 21 fail only because litellm is not installed in this runner. The same 21 fail on the base commit.
Skipped: Nothing. Both reviewer findings were valid and are fixed. No other issues found.

Re-apply the permission prune when serving cached formatted tools.
On a cache hit, _format_tools_for_completion returns the stored list without pruning it. A PermissionManager deny rule added after the first request leaves the denied tool in the advertised schema. The edit hint drops, but the schema stays.

Patch the provider dispatch boundary in this test.
The fake replaces _chat_completion. The real formatting call and the dispatch below it do not run. Line 136 re-runs _format_tools_for_completion on the argument, so sent_tools records the test's own formatter output. A regression in the dispatcher, or in the formatter call inside _chat_completion, would still pass. Capture tools at the _unified_dispatcher.chat_completion call instead.

Apply the permission deny set to custom-LLM tools, or keep the edit hint in step with them.
On the custom-LLM path, the edit hint and the tool payload disagree. _offers_edit_tool skips denied edit tools, so a denied edit_file schema gets no hint. The custom-LLM branch still sends that schema unfiltered, so the model sees the tool without its guidance. Filter denied tools from tool_param before llm_kwargs is built, including raw callables and dicts. Add a custom-LLM test that asserts the sent tool names.

src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/agent/chat_mixin.py: inside a nested tool list, _offers_edit_tool now counts only dicts with type == "function" and a function dict. These are the same dicts _format_tools_for_completion keeps. Before, a nested {"name": "edit_file"} was dropped from the payload but still earned the edit hint. (CodeRabbit Minor; valid.)
src/praisonai-agents/tests/unit/agent/test_system_prompt_relevant_hints.py: added test_nested_bare_name_dict_gets_no_hint. It asserts that the formatter sends no tools and that the hint is absent. It fails without the fix.
Already addressed in a0ad968af: the permission-denied edit tool check and the nested schema send assertion (CodeRabbit inline and nitpick).

_offers_edit_toollook inside any nested list, strings included. But_format_tools_for_completionkeeps only tool dicts from a nested list, sotools=[["edit_file"]]sends no edit tool and yet got the "use edit_file" hint. That told the model to use a tool it doesn't have; Greptile flagged it on #6220.This counts only dicts inside nested lists, matching the formatter. I checked the formatter's output for each shape with a fresh agent, because the formatter caches by tool name:
tools=[[{edit_file schema}]]edit_file[["edit_file"]]The bot's test asserted the false positive. It now uses a nested schema, plus a test that a nested string gets no hint. 33 related tests pass on current main.
