DecisionDeck

DecisionDeck is a simple decision-support web application that helps people compare multiple options using criteria that matter to them.

The Problem

When people compare several options, the decision can become confusing because different factors matter at different levels.

For example, when choosing between three hosting providers, someone may care about:

  • Price
  • Reliability
  • Customer support
  • Ease of use

DecisionDeck gives structure to that comparison.

Who It Is For

DecisionDeck is designed for anyone who needs to compare multiple options before making a decision.

Examples include:

  • choosing software
  • selecting a hosting provider
  • comparing suppliers
  • evaluating schools
  • comparing apartments
  • choosing service providers

Core User Goal

Help the user understand which option best matches the priorities they entered, and explain why.

How It Works

  1. Create a decision.
  2. Add at least two options.
  3. Add comparison criteria.
  4. Give each criterion an importance rating from 1 to 5.
  5. Score each option from 1 to 10 against each criterion.
  6. DecisionDeck calculates weighted scores.
  7. The options are ranked.
  8. The app explains why the top-ranked option performed better based on the user's own inputs.
  9. The decision can be saved and reopened later.

Scoring Logic

For each criterion:

Option Score × Criterion Importance = Weighted Score

The weighted scores are added together for each option.

The result is based entirely on the user's own criteria, importance values, and scores.

DecisionDeck does not claim that the highest-ranked option is objectively the best.

Features

  • Create a decision
  • Add and remove options
  • Add and remove criteria
  • Set criterion importance from 1–5
  • Score options from 1–10
  • Calculate weighted results
  • Rank all options
  • Explain why the top option ranked highest
  • Identify trade‑offs between options
  • Handle tied results
  • Save decisions
  • Reopen saved decisions
  • Edit saved decisions
  • Delete saved decisions
  • Persist data using localStorage
  • Responsive interface
  • Basic accessibility support

Technology

DecisionDeck intentionally uses a simple stack:

  • HTML5
  • CSS3
  • Vanilla JavaScript
  • Browser localStorage

No backend, database, authentication, framework, or external API is used.

Key Product Decisions

No AI API

The explanation is generated directly from the user's scores and weighted calculations.

This keeps the reasoning transparent and avoids fabricated explanations.

No Authentication

The MVP does not require accounts.

Saved decisions are stored in the browser using localStorage.

No Backend or Database

The purpose of the MVP is to validate the core decision‑support flow before introducing infrastructure that is not yet necessary.

Limited Scope

The first version focuses only on:

Create → Compare → Score → Understand → Save

Features such as collaboration, sharing, cloud sync, PDF exports, and automatic research were deliberately left out.

Accessibility

Accessibility was treated as part of the build rather than an afterthought.

The project includes:

  • semantic HTML
  • form labels
  • keyboard‑accessible controls
  • visible focus states
  • understandable validation messages
  • responsive layouts
  • accessible success and error feedback

What I Learned

This project helped me practise:

  • turning a raw idea into a refined product concept
  • defining an MVP
  • writing a PRD
  • creating build constraints for an AI coding agent
  • building in phases instead of generating the whole product at once
  • weighted scoring logic
  • localStorage persistence
  • validation
  • accessibility
  • product decision‑making
  • reviewing AI‑generated code rather than accepting it blindly

Future Improvements

Possible future versions could include:

  • cloud accounts
  • device sync
  • collaborative decisions
  • shared comparison links
  • templates
  • PDF reports
  • automatic product research
  • optional AI‑assisted explanations

These were intentionally excluded from the MVP.

Project Context

DecisionDeck was built as part of the Ship & Found Bootcamp Ship Log.

The project was developed using an AI‑assisted workflow while keeping product decisions, scope control, testing, and review intentional.
