In \CalcJob.define(), the \code\ input port is declared with
equired=False\ because \CalcJob\ allows importing an existing calculation job via
emote_folder\ (without executing code). According to the docstring of \alidate_calc_job()\ and the port help string, \code\ is required whenever
emote_folder\ is not provided.
However, in \alidate_calc_job(), lines 67–70 previously did:
\\python
code = inputs.get('code', None)
if not code:
# If the namespace no longer contains \code\ port we skip validation
return None
\
This conflated whether the port exists on the namespace (\ctx) with whether the caller provided \code\ in \inputs. Consequently:
When a user instantiated or launched a \CalcJob\ without specifying \code\ (e.g. in workflows or \iida-workgraph), \alidate_calc_job()\ silently succeeded with
eturn None.
Execution then crashed much later during process initialization in \CalcJob._setup_inputs()\ with \AttributeError: 'AttributesFrozendict' object has no attribute 'code'\ (or \PluginInternalError: CalcInfo should have the information of the code to be launched\ during execution if \metadata.computer\ was explicitly provided).
The check \if not computer_from_code and not computer_from_metadata: return 'no computer has been specified in \metadata.computer\ nor via \code.'\ was unreachable when \code\ was \None.
Solution
Check whether the 'code'\ port actually exists on \ctx\ via \ctx.get_port('code').
Check whether the calculation requires stashing or unstashing (\is_stash\ or \is_unstash\ where \metadata.options.stash\ / \unstash\ is required and \code\ is optional, e.g. for login-node stash copy modes).
When \has_code_port\ is True and
emote_folder\ is not provided, enforce that \code\ is specified for standard calculation jobs, returning 'neither \\code\\ nor \
emote_folder\\ was specified.'.
Use \computer_from_code = code.computer if code else None\ to safely handle missing \code.
Added unit and integration tests covering all validation permutations in \ ests/engine/processes/calcjobs/test_calc_job.py.
validate_calc_job now checks whether a missing code is allowed for the input namespace. The tests cover missing code and remote folder inputs, code and computer validation, stash and transfer inputs, and an arithmetic calculation launch without code.

Summary
Code and remote folder validation src/aiida/engine/processes/calcjobs/calcjob.py, tests/engine/processes/calcjobs/test_calc_job.py
validate_calc_job reports a missing-code error when the input defines a code port and does not require stash or unstash. Validation continues without a code for stash and transfer inputs. Tests cover remote folder and code inputs, computer checks, stash and transfer inputs, and launching an arithmetic calculation without code.
Stash jobs in this mode can fail later than expected; correct the validation before merging or accept this bounded risk.

Explanation
The change addresses issue #6931. validate_calc_job() now checks whether the code port exists, requires code when remote_folder is absent for standard jobs, and returns neither codenorremote_folder was specified.. It preserves missing-code handling for required stash or unstash inputs. The added tests cover the missing-code error, metadata computer case, remote-folder case, valid code, and stash or transfer cases.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The source change is limited to validate_calc_job() behavior for missing code, remote_folder, stash, and unstash inputs. The added tests directly verify this behavior and related existing validation paths. No unrelated product behavior is changed.

Require code for SUBMIT_CUSTOM_CODE stash jobs.
If a StashCalculation selects SUBMIT_CUSTOM_CODE without code, the required stash namespace makes this condition exempt the job. With valid computer and resources inputs, validate_calc_job then returns None, although this mode requires code. Limit the stash exemption to modes that do not require code. Update the code-presence check in validate_calc_job so the is_stash/is_unstash
exemption does not bypass the requirement for code when the stash mode is
SUBMIT_CUSTOM_CODE; preserve the exemption for stash modes that do not require
