v3.0.0: Nuxt Content 3 support - #108
Conversation
Tooling - Add CI workflow (lint, typecheck, test, build) - Standalone tsconfig so tests run on a clean clone; add typecheck script - Migrate to ESLint 9 flat config; require Node 18.20+ - Upgrade image-size to v2; remove dev:setup workaround Features - Generate srcset/sizes for images with @2x/@3x variants (#106) - Register the assets cache as a Nuxt layer automatically so Nuxt Image works without `extends` (#84) Fixes - Copy assets on `modules:done` so builds restored from experimental.buildCache still get assets (#88) - Invalidate only affected documents in Nuxt Content's cache instead of clearing it every run (#18) - Live reload Nuxt Image images and srcset candidates (#77) - Respect contentExtensions when deciding what is an asset - Process assets inside headings; skip excerpt when walking meta - Fix relative path detection for data:, mailto: and anchors - Fix source keys with non-word characters - Fix crash rewriting cached docs with non-string frontmatter - Preserve query strings on frontmatter asset paths Internals - Split asset index into assets.json (build process) and content.json (server process), one writer each - Resolve cache folder relative to the package - Remove dead path-template code and unreachable socket branches - Add unit tests for paths, srcset, cache diffing, walkers and cache rewriting Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Rewrite the module for Nuxt Content 3 and Nuxt 4. Architecture - Everything runs in the build process: collections are read from content.config.ts via c12 (with a shim for @nuxt/content so schemas load without Content's validators), asset folders are scanned and copied at setup, and paths are rewritten in the `content:file:afterParse` hook - Body walker handles both minimark and hast trees - Assets are indexed by absolute source path; srcset variants are looked up the same way - Remote (git) sources are picked up lazily once Content has cloned them - A fingerprint of the asset index is added to Content's markdown build options so its parse cache re-parses documents when assets change - Live reload uses Vite's HMR channel; watching uses chokidar - Drops unstorage, ws, listhen, debounce and unist-util-visit Playground and tests - Playground ported to Nuxt 4 + Content 3 with technical content (#53); dependencies hoisted to the repo root; pinned @nuxt/image ^1 because 2.1 (IPX 4 beta) stalls `nuxi generate` on this toolchain - End-to-end fixture using Content 3 with node's native sqlite - Unit tests for collections resolution and content processing Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Keep the v3 module code; port the authored `srcSet` fix into `processContent` (v1.9's socket, store and resolver fixes don't apply to the v3 architecture) - Replace the playground with the Nuxt UI playground from main, converted to Nuxt Content 3 (content.config.ts with local and GitHub sources, queryCollection) - Replace the basic test with main's e2e tests and fixtures, converted to Content 3: queryCollection, minimark bodies, Vite HMR for live reload, and the sql dump for generate - Update to the latest Nuxt 4.5, Content 3.16, Nuxt Image 2.1, test-utils 4, vitest 5 and ESLint 10 - Merge README, CHANGELOG, CI and scripts; fix the StackBlitz start command Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

to include the external source directory, so pages whose path starts with
`/external` link to `playground/external/<stem>.<extension>`. Leave the
content-path branch unchanged.
In `@src/build/assets.ts`:
- Line 64: Update the `getSrcset` handling in the `Object.assign` call so each
generated srcset candidate retains the source query string, matching the query
preserved in `srcAttr`. Leave candidate generation and other asset resolution
behavior unchanged.
In `@src/build/process.ts`:
- Line 34: Update the asset-resolution loop around `index.resolve` to resolve
only URL-bearing properties appropriate to each body element, such as `src`,
`href`, and `poster`; leave text attributes such as `alt` unchanged.
In `@src/runtime/plugin.client.ts`:
- Line 19: Update the asset selector in the HMR removal handler to match only
exact asset paths, not paths that merely contain the removed path as a
substring; filter each src and srcset candidate for an exact match before
applying the visual update.
- Line 50: After updating a matched element’s src in the plugin client, reload
its parent when the element is a source belonging to an HTMLMediaElement, so the
media element reselects the updated resource.
- Around line 55-59: Update the srcset handling in the live-reload code in
plugin.client.ts to split candidates at commas before updating each URL’s query
parameters, then rejoin them with commas. Preserve each candidate’s descriptor
and ensure every URL receives the time parameter.
In `@src/runtime/utils/content.ts`:
- Line 21: Update the walk filter used by processContent so identity keys are
skipped only at the content root. Continue processing nested fields with the
same names, including frontmatter and schema data, so their asset URLs are
resolved.
In `@test/fixtures/content/nuxt.config.ts`:
- Line 17: Update the sqliteConnector setting in both
test/fixtures/content/nuxt.config.ts (line 17) and
test/fixtures/image/nuxt.config.ts (line 19) to use a connector compatible with
the supported Node 20.19 runtime, or require Node 22.5 or newer for the test
environment; apply the same choice to both fixtures.

<excerpt># Collection Sources > Learn how to import your files in Nuxt Content collections. Nuxt Content provides several ways to import content files into your collection. You can configure the source by using the `source` property within `defineCollection`: ```ts import { defineCollection, defineContentConfig } from &`#39`;`@nuxt/content`&`#39`; export default defineContentConfig({ collections: { docs: defineCollection({ source: &`#39`;**&`#39`;, type: &`#39`;page&`#39`; }) } }) ``` ## `source` The `source` property can be defined as either a string (following a glob pattern) or an object, allowing more detailed source configuration for your target directory and files within the content folder. Example: - `source: &`#39`;**&`#39`;` includes all files within the content directory and its subdirectories. - `source: &`#39`;**/*.md&`#39`;` includes all `Markdown` files within the content directory and its subdirectories. - `source: &`#39`;docs/**/*.yml&`#39`;` includes all `YML` files within the `content/docs` and its subdirectories. - `source: &`#39`;**/*.{json,yml}&`#39`;` includes `JSON` or `YML` file within the content directory and all its subdirectories. - `source: &`#39`;*.json&`#39`;` includes only `JSON` files located directly within the content directory, excluding any subdirectories. ### `include` (required) Glob pattern of your target repository and files in the content folder. ### `exclude` Glob patterns to exclude content from the import. ### `prefix` This configuration only applied for page type with 1-to-1 relationship between content files and pages on your site. It represents the path prefix (base URL) of the corresponding page on the website. The `prefix` must start by a leading `/`. By default, module extracts the static prefix of `source`(or `source.include`) and uses it as a prefix for content paths. For example, if you define `/en/**` source, module will auto-fill the `prefix` with `/en`. You can manually provide a prefix to override this behavior. The prefix can be removed by setting `prefix: &`#39`;/&`#39`;` in the collection source. ```ts defineCollection({ type: "page", source: { include: "en/**", exclude: ["en/index.md"], prefix: &`#39`;/&`#39`; } }) ``` ### `cwd` Root directory for content matching. Example: If you want to include files from a folder outside the content directory, set the absolute path of that folder to the `cwd` property. ```ts source: { cwd: path.resolve(&`#39`;packages/my-pkg/docs&`#39`;), include: &`#39`;**/*.md&`#39`;, } ``` ### `repository` External source representing a remote git repository URL (e.g., https://github.com/nuxt/content), or an object containing Git branch / tag information, or optionally authentication When defining an external source you must also define the `include` option. `include` pattern is essential for the module to know which files to use for the collection. ```js import { defineCollection, defineContentConfig } from &`#39`;`@nuxt/content`&`#39`; export default defineContentConfig({ collections: { docs: defineCollection({ type: &`#39`;page&`#39`;, source: { repository: &`#39`;https://github.com/nuxt/content&`#39`;, include: &`#39`;docs/content/**&`#39`;, }, }) } }) ``` #### `branch` / `tag` This option allows for cloning a Git repository by its tag or branch. Example: If you want to clone by a tag, make the `repository` attribute an object, with the `url` of your repository, and set the `tag` attribute. ```js import { defineCollection, defineContentConfig } from &`#39`;`@nuxt/content`&`#39`; export default defineContentConfig({ collections: { docs: defineCollection({ type: &`#39`;page&`#39`;, source: { repository: { url: &`#39`;https://github.com/nuxt/content&`#39`;, tag: &`#39`;v1&`#39`; }, include: &`#39`;docs/content/**&`#39`;, }, }) } }) ``` Example: If you want to clone by a remote branch, make the `repository` attribute an object, with the `url` of your repository, and set the `branch` attribute. ```js import { defineCollection, defineContentConfig } from &`#39`;`@nuxt/content`&`#39`; export default defin…[truncated]</excerpt>

Include the external source directory in the GitHub link.
Nuxt Content removes the fixed playground/external/ prefix from external source keys. For playground/external/index.md, stem is therefore index, and the current link points to playground/index.md instead of the source file.
🐛 Suggested fix
const { path, stem, extension } = page.value
const file = path.startsWith('/external')

Preserve the source query in generated srcset URLs.
If a document references photo.png?v=2, resolve preserves ?v=2 in srcAttr but generates srcset candidates without it. Browsers that select a srcset candidate then request a different URL and can display a stale image. Apply the source query to each generated candidate as well as srcAttr.

Resolve only asset URL properties on body elements.
If an image has src="image.png" and alt="image.png", this loop rewrites both properties. The rendered alternative text becomes an asset URL. Limit resolution to URL-bearing properties appropriate to each element, such as src, href, and poster.

Match the removed asset path exactly.
When an asset removal event provides /images/photo.png, [src*="/images/photo.png"] also matches /images/photo.png-backup. The handler then dims the unrelated element. Filter each src and srcset candidate for an exact asset-path match before applying the update. This is a development-only visual error because the handler runs only when client-side HMR is available; it does not block the asset workflow.

<title>HTMLMediaElement: load() method - Web APIs | MDN</title>
<location>https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/HTMLMediaElement/load</location>
<excerpt>HTMLMediaElement: load() method - Web APIs | MDN # HTMLMediaElement: load() method Baseline Widely available This feature is well established and works across many devices and browser versions. It’s been available across browsers since July 2015. - See full compatibility - Learn more The `HTMLMediaElement` method `load()` resets the media element to its initial state and begins the process of selecting a media source and loading the media in preparation for playback to begin at the beginning. The amount of media data that is prefetched is determined by the value of the element&`#39`;s `preload` attribute. This method is generally only useful when you&`#39`;ve made dynamic changes to the set of sources available for the media element, either by changing the element&`#39`;s `src` attribute or by adding or removing ` ` elements nested within the media element itself. `load()` will reset the element and rescan the available sources, thereby causing the changes to take effect. ## Syntax ``` load() ``` ### Parameters None. ### Return value None (`undefined`). ## Usage notes Calling `load()` aborts all ongoing operations involving this media element, then begins the process of selecting and loading an appropriate media resource given the options specified in the ` ` or ` ` element and its `src` attribute or child ` ` element(s). This is described in more detail in the HTML video and audio page. The process of aborting any ongoing activities will cause any outstanding `Promise` s returned by `play()` being fulfilled or rejected as appropriate based on their status before the loading of new media can begin. Pending play promises are aborted with an `"AbortError"` `DOMException`. Appropriate events will be sent to the media element itself as the load process proceeds: - If the element is already in the process of loading media, that load process is aborted and the `abort` event is sent. - If the element has already been initialized with media, the `emptied` event is sent. - If resetting the playback position to the beginning of the media actually changes the playback position (that is, it was not already at the beginning), a `timeupdate` event is sent. - Once media has been selected and loading is ready to begin, the `loadstart` event is delivered. - From this point onward, events are sent just like any media load. ## Examples This example finds a ` ` element in the document and resets it by calling `load()`. ``` const mediaElem = document.querySelector("video"); mediaElem.load(); ``` ## Specifications | Specification | | --- | | HTML # dom-media-load-dev |</excerpt>

Reload the parent after changing a media <source>.
When a matched <source> belongs to a media element, changing its src does not restart resource selection. The video can continue displaying the old resource during development until the parent media element reloads.

For /a.png, /b.png, the regex consumes the comma and /b.png as part of the first match. The callback returns /a.png,?time=… /b.png, so the second URL does not receive the cache-busting parameter. This affects development-only asset live reload.

Restrict identity-key filtering to the content root.
walk applies this filter at every depth. For frontmatter such as image: { path: './photo.png' }, the nested path value never reaches processContent, so the asset URL remains relative. Skip root-level Content identity fields without skipping user fields with the same names inside frontmatter or schema data.

Make both test fixtures usable on the supported Node versions. package.json permits Node 20.19, but both fixtures select native SQLite, which requires Node 22.5 or newer. How it works now
content.config.tsthe same way Content does (via c12), each source folder is scanned for non-content files, and assets are copied and indexed at module setup. No Nitro plugin, no cross-process index, no unstorage.content:file:afterParsehook. Bodies are walked in bothminimark(default) andhastform; frontmatter, schema fields andmetaare walked too..data/content/<host>-<owner>-<repo>-<ref>folder and scanned eagerly when present, or lazily when the first document from them is parsed.Removed

Content 3 does not expose a way to re-parse a single document. In dev, if an image is added or resized after the document referencing it was parsed, the browser refreshes the image but the stored document keeps the old path or size until the document is saved or the dev server restarts.
