Adds a keyless USGS 3DEP lidar point cloud provider for terrain, landscape, and scattering workflows.
What it does
Given a WGS84 bounding box, the skill queries the USGS TNM products API for Lidar Point Cloud (LPC) tiles and returns a bounded, deterministic candidate list. A chosen tile is downloaded as LAZ and returned as a validated AssetDescriptor carrying USGS-PD license metadata and a USGS 3DEP attribution string.
Two tools are exposed:
search_pointcloud_terrain lists candidates with title, format, size, and tile bounds so a tile can be chosen before committing to a large download.
download_pointcloud_terrain performs the download and returns the AssetDescriptor.
Boundedness
Queries are capped at 0.04 square degrees and at most 25 candidates. Results are ordered by tile title and source id, so the same bounds always return the same list rather than an unbounded crawl. An oversized bbox is rejected instead of being silently widened.
Verification
Verified against a real USGS 3DEP tile rather than a mock:
no API key and no Authorization header on any request
The download was repeated through the skill's own download_tile() helper and produced a byte-identical digest.
Notes
Coverage is the contiguous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and US territories. Bounding boxes elsewhere return an empty candidate list; that is a coverage limit, not a query error.
Tiles are commonly 40-200 MB, so download_pointcloud_terrain is not idempotent.
Scope is download only. Decimation, reprojection, DEM raster generation, and DCC scene import belong to the target DCC skill.
.gitattributes normalizes text to LF so packed skill archives stay byte-reproducible across checkout hosts.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added tools to search USGS 3DEP lidar tiles by geographic bounds and download selected tiles as LAZ files.
Search results cover the contiguous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories, with searches limited to 0.04 square degrees and up to 25 candidates.
Downloaded files include USGS attribution and licensing details.
Documentation
Added guidance on coverage, search limits, tile selection, and download behavior.
Adds USGS 3DEP point-cloud search and download tools. Searches validate WGS84 bounds and return sorted LAZ candidates. Downloads verify the payload before publishing it and return an asset descriptor with attribution. Repository text files are configured to use LF line endings.
Validates query bounds and URLs, filters and sorts LAZ candidates, and exposes the search tool. The README describes coverage and query limits. Smoke tests check candidate handling, URL restrictions, and the search response.
Select, download, and describe a tile skill/pointcloud-terrain/scripts/_tnm.py, skill/pointcloud-terrain/scripts/pointcloud_terrain.py, skill/pointcloud-terrain/tools.yaml, skill/pointcloud-terrain/SKILL.md, tests/smoke_test.py
Selects a candidate, verifies the downloaded payload, and returns file details with an attributed asset descriptor. The skill documentation and smoke tests cover the download and output schema.

Verify the download before publishing its final path.
For a response with Content-Length, Python’s sized read(chunk_size) can return an empty result after an early EOF without raising IncompleteRead. This loop then reports a truncated tile as a successful download and validated asset. Count bytes against Content-Length, check the LASF signature, and write to a temporary file before replacing the destination. Remove the temporary file on failure. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Declare geospatial or remove both group references.
Both tools set group: geospatial, but neither skill/pointcloud-terrain/tools.yaml nor skill/pointcloud-terrain/SKILL.md declares that group. The dcc-mcp-core v0.19.67 validation contract checks group references against declared groups. The new validate_skills() smoke step therefore cannot accept this skill as declared. Add a group declaration and reference it from the skill metadata, or remove both group fields. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Make both output schemas match the emitted result.
The search schema requires count, but search_pointcloud_terrain.main emits candidate_count. Both entry points use skill_success, which places those fields—and asset_descriptor—under context, not at the top level required by the schemas on Lines 26 and 67. A client validating a successful result against either declared schema will reject it. Describe the actual result envelope, including context.candidate_count and context.asset_descriptor. Adds a bounded, keyless lidar point cloud provider for terrain workflows.
- _tnm.py: TNM products client with bounded bbox queries capped at 0.04
square degrees and 25 candidates, ordered by title and source id so the
same bounds always return the same list.
- pointcloud_terrain.py: downloads one tile and returns a validated
AssetDescriptor carrying USGS-PD license and 3DEP attribution.
- search_pointcloud_terrain.py: lists candidates with size and format
before a download is committed.
Verified against a real USGS 3DEP tile: 48093708 bytes, sha256
d6ce2399924193e38ec11bd11e7e1e482557564350715c7b45e287bb0aa89b03,
LASF signature. No API key used.
Skill bundles are packed into archives whose SHA-256 is pinned in marketplace
entries. Without this, a Windows checkout rewrites text files to CRLF and the
published digest no longer matches the packed one.
Address the blocking review findings on the pointcloud-terrain skill:
- Declare the `geospatial` tool group in `groups.yaml` and reference it from
`metadata.dcc-mcp.groups`; both tools assigned to a group that no skill
declares previously loaded behind an undeclared group instead of a real one.
- Describe the real `skill_success` envelope in both `output_schema` entries:
`required: [success]` with the payload under `context`, matching
`dcc-mcp-core` and the `asset-source` reference skill. `count` is now the
actual `candidate_count` key.
- Pin every request, including each redirect hop, to the USGS hosts that
publish TNM metadata and 3DEP tiles (`tnmaccess.nationalmap.gov`,
`rockyweb.usgs.gov`, HTTPS only). A caller-supplied `endpoint` can no longer
turn the skill into a GET proxy for internal HTTPS services.
- List only tiles with a real `.laz` URL and derive the variant format from
that URL, so an LAS-only product can no longer be published as
`format: laz`.
- Download through a `.part` sidecar and only replace the target after the byte
count matches `Content-Length` and the payload starts with `LASF`, so a
truncated or HTML error response fails instead of shipping as a tile.
Smoke tests cover the allowlist, the LAZ filter, the envelope/schema
agreement, and the truncation/non-LAZ rejection. Verified locally with
`dcc-mcp-core 0.20.44` on Python 3.12, plus one live search (6 LAZ candidates)
and one live 171,350,840-byte tile download that passed both guards.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Validate the shape of the TNM JSON response before indexing it.
json.loads can return any JSON value. If it returns a list or null, payload.get raises AttributeError. If items contains a non-object entry, laz_download_url(item) raises AttributeError on item.get. In download_pointcloud_terrain, this surfaces as a generic failure. The caller cannot tell it is a malformed upstream response.
Check the mapping and list types explicitly. Raise one clear error for a malformed response.
Proposed fix
- payload = json.loads(response.read().decode("utf-8"))- items = [item for item in (payload.get("items") or []) if laz_download_url(item)]+ payload = json.loads(response.read().decode("utf-8"))+ raw_items = payload.get("items") or [] if isinstance(payload, dict) else None+ if not isinstance(raw_items, list):+ raise ValueError("Malformed TNM response: expected an object with an 'items' list")+ items = [item for item in raw_items if isinstance(item, dict) and laz_download_url(item)]
Based on learnings: JSON response parsing that is followed by key indexing must route non-mapping values and invalid fields to the malformed-response path.

Spatial Filters
query(..., *, bounds)
query(..., *, huc)
Optionally queries datasets within the indicated bounding box and/or hydrologic unit. The `bounds` input should be a BoundingBox-like input with a CRS. The `huc` input should be 2, 4, or 8-digit hydrologic unit code as a string (not an int). When using these parameters, the query will only return products that intersect these features. If you provide both bounds and huc, then only products that intersect both features will be returned.
File Formats
query(..., *, formats)
Only queries datasets that match the specified file formats.
Paging Parameters
query(..., *, max)
query(..., *, offset)
Specifies paging parameters for the query. The `max` is the maximum number of products that can be returned in the query - this value cannot exceed 1000. The `offset` is the number of products that should be skipped before the first product is read. Note that these parameters will generate an error if offset is greater than 100 and max is not a multiple of 5.

Note that these parameters will generate an error if offset is greater than 100 and max is not a multiple of 5.
Select Products
products(..., *, max_products)
products(..., *, offset)
Specify how many products, and which products, should be retrieved. Use `max_products` to specify the maximum number of search results whose info should be retrieved. Once this value is reached, all remaining search results are skipped. This input is essentially a more generalized “max” paging parameter. Unlike the paging parameter, `max_products` does not need to be a multiple of 5, and may also retrieve more than 1000 products (across multiple API queries). By default, max_products is set to None, which allows the command to retrieve info on any number of products.
By default, this command begins retrieving product info at the first search result. Use `offset` to skip the first N products before beginning to retrieve product info. You can combine offset with max_products to implement custom paging schemes. The offset must be less than the total number of products.
Connection Timeout
products(..., *, timeout)
Specifies a maximum time in seconds for connecting to the TNM server. This option is typically a scalar, but may also use a vector with two elements. In this case, the first value is the timeout to connect with the server, and the second value is the time for the server to return the first byte. You can also set timeout to None, in which case server queries will never time out. This may be useful…[truncated]</excerpt>

Paginate TNM results before filtering and capping.
query_candidates sends one request and processes only that response page. If the matching LPC products exceed the server page size, valid LAZ tiles are omitted. pick_tile can then reject a valid source_id that was on a later page.
Pass explicit max and offset values to build_query_url. Page until the results are exhausted, or until a documented hard limit. Then filter, sort, and cap the combined items. The existing sort is deterministic for the returned items; the issue is the incomplete candidate set, not dependence on upstream ordering.

Update build_query_url and query_candidates to request TNM results with explicit
max and offset values, advancing the offset until results are exhausted or a
documented hard limit is reached. Combine the fetched items before filtering,
sorting, and capping candidates so pick_tile can consider valid products from
later pages.

Follow-up to the download-guard review round:
- Walk every TNM result page (`max`/`offset`, capped by `MAX_SCANNED_ITEMS`)
before filtering, so a valid LAZ tile beyond the first page is not dropped
and `pick_tile` can still select it.
- Fall back to the TNM `sizeInBytes` value when the response carries no usable
`Content-Length`, so an early EOF is still rejected on servers that omit the
length.
Smoke tests cover the two-page walk (offsets 0 and 100, capped at 25) and the
Content-Length/size resolution.

Adds a keyless USGS 3DEP lidar point cloud provider for terrain, landscape, and scattering workflows.
What it does
Given a WGS84 bounding box, the skill queries the USGS TNM products API for
Lidar Point Cloud (LPC)tiles and returns a bounded, deterministic candidate list. A chosen tile is downloaded asLAZand returned as a validatedAssetDescriptorcarryingUSGS-PDlicense metadata and a USGS 3DEP attribution string. Two tools are exposed:
search_pointcloud_terrainlists candidates with title, format, size, and tile bounds so a tile can be chosen before committing to a large download.download_pointcloud_terrainperforms the download and returns theAssetDescriptor.Boundedness
Queries are capped at 0.04 square degrees and at most 25 candidates. Results are ordered by tile title and source id, so the same bounds always return the same list rather than an unbounded crawl. An oversized bbox is rejected instead of being silently widened.
Verification
Verified against a real USGS 3DEP tile rather than a mock:

download_tile()helper and produced a byte-identical digest.Notes
