API part of jsdelivr/globalping-dash#210

BREAKING:
The after parameter now represents a probeLogId, not a Redis ID. This will require an update of the dashboard as well, and must be deployed together with that update.

Walkthrough

The change adds time-series storage for probe logs, with 30-day retention and before/after cursor pagination. It moves scope reporting out of log storage into dedicated Redis-backed storage and adds WebSocket reporting and an HTTP read route. Probe settings and log payload schemas receive validation and gateway updates. Tests cover storage, pagination, scope eligibility, payload handling, and log synchronization.

Plan reclamation for probe_log_counter and index support for message search.

Two gaps in the storage design:

  • The retention policy covers probe_log only. probe_log_counter keeps one row per probe UUID forever, including probes that were deleted or never return. Add a periodic cleanup for counters whose probe has no remaining logs, or accept the growth explicitly.
  • src/probe/logs-storage.ts line 44 runs "message" ILIKE '%…%'. No index supports that predicate, so each search scans the probe's retained rows. If search latency matters, add a pg_trgm GIN index on message, or restrict search to a time window.

Assert the null scope and level passthrough in the response body.

Collapse the four duplicated deadline checks.

The function throws 'Probe logs did not stabilize.' at lines 141-143, 156-158, 164-166, and 179-181. The bookkeeping repeats timeout - (Date.now() - start) three times. A single deadline value plus one guard per loop iteration expresses the same behavior.

Consider computing const deadline = start + timeout; once and using deadline - Date.now() for both the request timeout and the loop guard. Also consider sharing the request construction with waitForLogSync; the two helpers now poll the same endpoint with different resilience options.

Normalize unzoned log timestamps before insertion.

The handler accepts 2026-08-15 and passes it unchanged to the timestamptz column. PostgreSQL interprets this value using the session TimeZone, so the stored instant depends on that setting. If date-only values remain valid, convert them to explicit UTC before insertion. Otherwise, reject them in logTimestampSchema. Add a UTC and non-UTC persistence round-trip test.

Transient request errors abort the helper instead of retrying.

Line 160 rethrows every error that is not ETIMEDOUT and that occurs before the deadline. The sibling helpers waitProbeToDisconnect and waitProbeToConnect in this same file log the error code and continue polling. A single ECONNRESET or ECONNREFUSED while the probe container restarts therefore fails the whole e2e case rather than being retried.

The AI summary states this helper "retries transient failures", which does not match Line 160.

No executing coverage exists for writeLogs ID allocation or cleanup.

insertLogs writes rows directly and bypasses ProbeLogsStorage.writeLogs. The unit tests in test/tests/unit/ws/probe-logs.test.ts stub timeSeriesClient.transaction with .resolves(), so the stubbed callback never runs. The result is that the raw upsert arithmetic (SET "lastAllocatedId" = probe_log_counter."lastAllocatedId" + EXCLUDED."lastAllocatedId"), the previousLastAllocatedId derivation, and the CLEANUP_INTERVAL boundary branch in src/probe/logs-storage.ts Lines 145-171 never execute against PostgreSQL.

That raw SQL is the most error-prone part of this change. Add an integration test that calls writeLogs twice against the real time-series client and asserts contiguous probeLogId values and the skipped-marker row.

Move the retention delete off the log ingest transaction.

The probeLogId <= new - MAX_RETAINED_LOGS predicate has no receivedAt bound, so PostgreSQL must consider every chunk of probe_log inside the hypertable for the delete. The delete runs inside the same transaction that inserts the batch, so the WebSocket ingest path holds the probe_log_counter row lock for the whole delete. Every 10,000 logs per probe, one ingest batch pays that cost and blocks concurrent writes for that probe.

The TimescaleDB retention policy already drops data older than three days. Consider running the per-probe cap as a background job, or bound the delete by receivedAt so chunk exclusion applies.

Looks like hasMore and nextCursor part of the design is missing, so user can't go back in history further than 1000 lines.

The original proposed design wouldn't have worked with the dashboard (no live tail support because of the missing after parameter) and the dashboard currently has no use for the hasMore and nextCursor params. Do we still want to add those? @MartinKolarik

44-57: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Define the scope-validity rule once.

The same rule exists in three forms: the JavaScript filter at line 147, the readScopes predicate at line 49, and the backfill predicate at line 177. The forms are not equivalent. scope.trim() removes Unicode whitespace such as U+00A0, but the PostgreSQL [[:space:]] class does not. A historical scope padded with U+00A0 therefore passes the backfill predicate, reaches readScopes, and is returned to the dashboard. scopesSchema in src/probe/schema/get-probe-logs-schema.ts trims that value again, so the scope no longer matches any row and the filter returns nothing.

Extract one shared predicate and one shared regular expression, then use them in all three places.

♻️ Proposed shared definition
+const INVALID_SCOPE_PATTERN = /^\s|\s$|,/;

 			: [];
-						.whereRaw('"scope" !~ \'(^[[:space:]]|[[:space:]]$|,)\'')
+						.whereRaw('"scope" !~ ?', [ INVALID_SCOPE_SQL_PATTERN ])

The JavaScript \s class still differs from [[:space:]], so also decide which class is authoritative and align scopesSchema with it.

Give cursor validation errors specific messages

registerGetProbeLogsRoute forwards Joi’s generic valid.error.message to the client. Add .messages({ 'any.invalid': ... }) to logIdSchema and the object schema so clients can distinguish an out-of-range cursor from an invalid before/after order. Keep each override on the schema where its any.invalid error is created.

src/probe/log-scopes-storage.ts (1)

48-55: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Bound the known-scope fan-out in readScopes.

knownScopes comes from a Redis set that probes populate with arbitrary scope names. Two consequences follow from an unbounded set:

  • Line 48 issues one countProbeLogScopeReporters command per known scope on every cache miss. The Redis round trips grow linearly with the number of distinct scope names ever reported.
  • Line 55 spreads counts into Math.max. A very large array throws RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded instead of returning a threshold.

Each reporter is capped at MAX_SCOPES_PER_REPORTER, but the global set of distinct names is not capped. Consider capping KNOWN_SCOPES_KEY cardinality on the write path, or computing the maximum with a reduce and batching the counts in a pipeline.

♻️ Proposed change for the maximum computation
-		const totalReporters = Math.max(0, ...counts);
+		const totalReporters = counts.reduce((max, count) => Math.max(max, count), 0);

Use the IP-based adopted-probe lookup for initial settings.

Line 35 gives getByUuid() priority over getByIp(). If the UUID and connection IP resolve to different adopted probes, this emits settings for the wrong probe. Read settings only with adoptedProbes.getByIp(probe.ipAddress).

Proposed fix
-			const settings = (adoptedProbes.getByUuid(probe.uuid) || adoptedProbes.getByIp(probe.ipAddress))?.settings;
+			const settings = adoptedProbes.getByIp(probe.ipAddress)?.settings;

Based on learnings: adopted-probe socket lookups, including the initial api:settings:update emission, must use AdoptedProbes.getByIp(probe.ipAddress).
