Load testing the gate has meant ad-hoc scripts written per session, each covering
a slightly different slice and none of them committed. This is the version worth
keeping.

Drives every significant HTTP path concurrently, over USB networking and WiFi at
the same time where both are available, and samples the device heap throughout.

python tools/stress_test.py --usb 192.168.7.1 --bind 192.168.7.2
python tools/stress_test.py --usb 192.168.7.1 --bind 192.168.7.2 \
    --wifi 192.168.0.225 --duration 900 --workers 3 --out report.json

Why it checks Content-Length

The RNDIS transmit stall shows up as a response body that stops partway through
with no error raised. A status-only check reports success on exactly the failure
being hunted, so every response is verified against its declared length.

For the same reason the endpoint mix is weighted towards large transfers: small
requests keep working right through a stall and will happily report a clean run
while bulk transfer is broken.

Other notes

  • The marshal RSSI endpoint is discovered from /races and included whenever a
race has a stored trace, so the chunked response path is exercised too.
  • Heap is sampled from /status. That is the only in-flight health signal
available during a USB run — the composite device's CDC serial console is
unusable whenever RNDIS is active, so serial diagnostics cannot be read while
    load is applied.
  • --bind is required for USB. Without a source address the request can leave
    via the wrong interface.
  • Exits non-zero if any request failed, so it can gate a bench check.

Verified

Smoke run against an AIO on both transports: 139 requests, 18.6 MB, no failures,
heap floor reported correctly.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a whole-system stress-testing tool for running FPVGate devices.
    • Supports concurrent testing over USB networking and WiFi.
    • Validates response lengths, samples device heap usage, and exercises RSSI history when available.
    • Provides per-endpoint and transport statistics, optional stop-on-failure behavior, and JSON reports.
    • Returns a failure status when tests detect errors.
  • Documentation

    • Added usage guidance, configuration examples, and a reference to the SD card migration guide.

Testing the gate under load has meant ad-hoc scripts written per session, each
covering a slightly different slice and none of them committed. This is the
version worth keeping.

It drives every significant HTTP path concurrently, over USB networking and WiFi
at the same time where both are available, and verifies each response against its
Content-Length rather than just its status. That check matters: the RNDIS
transmit stall shows up as a body that stops partway through with no error
raised, so a status-only check reports success on exactly the failure being
hunted.

The marshal RSSI endpoint is discovered from /races and included whenever a race
has a stored trace, so the chunked response path gets exercised too. The endpoint
mix is weighted towards large transfers, because small requests keep working
right through a stall and will happily report a clean run while bulk transfer is
broken.

Heap is sampled from /status for the duration. That is the only in-flight health
signal available during a USB run: the composite device's CDC serial console is
unusable whenever RNDIS is active, so the serial diagnostics cannot be read while
load is applied.

The stress test can produce misleading passing results or overload the status endpoint with accepted command-line inputs, and it can hide failed monitoring or endpoint-discovery requests. Resolve these reporting and validation gaps before relying on it as a gate.

Record marshal discovery failures as failures.

Line 131 treats a timeout, connection failure, malformed JSON response, and missing response data from /races as proof that no RSSI history exists. If /races recovers during the workload, the run can pass without testing the marshal endpoint.

Return the discovery error and retry or record it as a test failure. Do not print the no-history message unless discovery completed successfully.

Record failed heap polls in stats.failures. heap_sampler performs a reachable /status request, but its exception path only calls stats.heap(-1, -1). main() returns success when stats.failures is empty, so a failed heap poll can produce PASSED and exit status 0 even when the documented “any request failed” condition is met. Add the heap poll failure to stats.failures before returning.

Take the initial heap sample before waiting.

Line 158 delays the first /status request by --heap-interval. A run shorter than that interval has no heap samples. The report also labels the first delayed sample as start.

Poll once before waiting for the next interval.

Reject configurations that cannot run the intended test.

Line 194 accepts --usb without --bind, so fetch() can select the wrong interface. It also accepts --workers 0, which starts no workload workers and can report PASSED. A negative --delay terminates a worker with ValueError without recording a failure. A zero --heap-interval creates a continuous /status polling loop.

Validate these values with ap.error() after parsing.

Folded into #14 instead. This was meant to go on the usb-ncm branch rather than separately - the stress test is now on feature/usb-ncm and will reach main when #14 merges.
